Baalu madedi was the daughter of Kaadedhooru Gangela manethana Soorala Mada and Aranthade mattara gutthu Deyi Madedi . The name Gangela manethana originates after Soorala Mada's ancestors defeated the gangas. He had Chieftainship over the ghat section of Koppa province. Shirva Nadibettu gutthu and Aranthade gutthu share the same lineage. Baalu Madedi was married to Shankara Hegde son of Mahadeva Hegde and Ujakke. Her husband was a prominent minister in Barkuru Royal Court .
Baalu Madedhi was very well trained in warfare and horse riding which she learnt from her father. She had a very strong army in Karkala region where she's also worshipped till date .
She had 2 twin sons Jartu Mada & Pernu Mada and 2 daughters Thunge Madedhi and Kaveri Madedhi. Baalu Madedhi had ownership over 9000 mudi property.
Palli and yeliyala village of Karkala taluk came into existence when her reign was split between her two daughters. Older daughter ( Pali - Tulu ) younger one ( Yeliyaal - Tulu). One of her sons married the heir of Belady Bhava.
One day when she had gone for her usual horse riding she comes across a lonely piglet . She carries it in her pallu and brings it to her gutthu after which she settles the piglet in a basket and sits for lunch . The piglet shows it's true form as panjurli daiva and asks baalu madedi "Daani baalu madedhi yenk badav-baajel deepujana ? Yaan panjurli baidhe" . Baalu Madedhi realises that daiva panjurli came to her abode and bows down to him . Thereafter the panjurli of Baalu madedhi's abode came to be known as Mattara panjurli - Mattel in tulu means bossom since baalu madedhi used her saree pallu from her Mattel the name came to existence. Today Mattara panjurli is worshipped by her descendants.
Baalu Madedhi had a very close devotional connection with panjurli it's belived that panjurli used to whisper guidance in her ears. Once during a battle between Ninjoora Konde and Baalu Madedhi, her rivals mocked and challenged her "Baalu Madedhi you are a women of truth if panjurli is really on your side then kick the dhambe kallu with such force that it should reach the melubanta bakiyaar". Baalu Madedhi prayed to her mattara panjurli and panjurli whispered in her ear encouraging her to go for it he'll take care of the rest . Baalu Madedhi trusting panjurli did as he told and as promised the heavy stone was directly projected into the melbanta bakiyaar. The stone still stands there as a proof of this incident. There are many such instances which shows the special bond between Baalu madedhi and her Panjurli.
Baalu madedi also took Badhrabaari kadenju under her wing and took care of him like her own son. Badhra baari kadenju is worshipped as a daiva along with mugerlu and thannimaniga . His tomb is built very next to Baalu madedhi's tomb in Yeliyala janana guttu bakiyaar ( back field ) .
Baalu madedhi also had leppu from Tirupati where they had built a chatra (personal chamber for her ) . One of the lane in tirupati is named after her surname "Mada" ( Belongs to Bunt community) .
